Well, being in the US, I DID see the Oscars live. I too was disappointed (I read your entry in the distorted version supplied by Google Translator!).
ResponderEliminarI also wished that the lead female actor had gone to Gabourey Sidibe in Precious--a first time actor in a great film. This film did get best supporting female actor. You may not have seen it in Spain. It was hard to watch, because of the subject, but it was done extremely well.
There was a news story saying why Avatar didn't win. Here is the gist of it: The Academy are all older people in the profession, they don't ever vote for innovation, they have never given an award to something in the "Sci Fi" category and they would have watched Avatar in their homes--not a theater--so they would not have seen it in 3D. Also the director, James Cameron, is not a Hollywood "insider," and there are a lot of politics involved in the awarding of Oscars.
So, yes, it was disappointing to me that it didn't win, but it was expected given all the reasons above. Sigh! Still, I can't wait to see it again.

Hi Susan,
ResponderEliminarThank you for your opinion!, Living in the USA gives you an opportunity of knowing the "whys" of these things, "very closely"! I have not seen "Precious" yet...I am downloading right now! ;-) Re: J. Cameron, Well, he wan 11 Oscars with "Titanic"! and it was a very innovative film in that time, with fantastic special effects...So, I really cannot understand why Avatar has been deprived of its (to my mind) deserved awards! In spite of all the reasons you give...
I used to trust the Oscars, in order to see the nominated and awarded films, thinking they were going to be "super good films!", but I think I am not going to do it anymore...I think they are worse choosing winners over time! An example is the film "No country for old men", awarded with a few Oscars on 2007...Well, it was a big disappointment (again in my opinion) too... Now with Avatar, one of the best films I have ever seen and enjoyed, I have lost the already little credibility I still had with them!
And yes, I would like to see it again! Maybe in the USA ;-)
Un abrazo,
Sergio
